SCIENTIFIC
EXCELLENCE
BSU courses
were devoted to topics of special current interest for the region, such
as:
Advanced
and Applied Sciences
Sustainable Economic Development
Sciences and Management
Ecology and Sea Resources
Information Technology
International Relations
Conflict Prevention and Negotiations
Math Models and Methodology for Crises and Risk Study
Innovative Higher Education
Here are
two examples demonstrating a high level of scientific excellence:
"Chaitin
Complexity and Applications" (1995), a course run by Gregory
J. Chaitin (US) and organized in cooperation with Auckland University,
New Zealand
"Advanced Course on Bioelectronics" (1996) run by a Nobel
Prize winner, Professor Ivar Giaever.
Beyond the
boundaries of Europe, BSU engaged in close cooperation with Tokay University,
Japan, for a "Course on Comparative Studies in Management"
and a "Roundtable on Subcultures, Nation Building and Forms of
Government: The Case of Central European Countries" (1994). 20
Japanese students took part in these activities thanks to the intensive
promotion of the Foundation's training programmes by Professor Rei
Shiratori, Director of the Research Institute of Social Sciences,
Tokay University, Tokyo, who is also a member of BSU International Scientific
Council. Post-graduate courses were held in co-operation with more
than 12 American Universities.
The first
book published by BSUF was Artificial Life. Grammatical Models
by Professor Gheorghe Paun. In the field of non-conventional computation,
BSUF worked with Professor Gheorghe Paun (Institute of Mathematics
of the Romanian Academy), Professor Cristian Calude (New Zealand,
University of Auckland, Department of Computer Science), and with Linguistics
and Mathematics School established by Professor Solomon Marcus,
member of the Romanian Academy.
Research
on ecology and sea biology was conducted in cooperation with the
National Institute for Marine Research and Development and with the Institute
for Marine Ecology and Geology (Professor Panin). The International Ocean
Institute (Malta) created a regional centre under the aegis of BSUF; the
centre is coordinated by Professor Alexandru Bologa.
